Who says a workspace can only be functional? The new Promenade Gardens office building in Budapest combines contemporary design with technical excellence and innovative sustainability.
Makes going to work enjoyable
The modern Promenade Gardens, in Budapest, is more than a workplace. Planned, built, and operated in accordance with strict ecological criteria, this innovative and highly efficient building was constructed in the city’s central business district in just two years. Employees can now enjoy a dynamic work environment- and a peaceful moment in the water-rich inner garden.
A powerful first impression
Elegant design flows through the four connected towers, offering a total of 25,000 square meters of space for offices, restaurants and retail. The imposing structure showcases three meter-high ceilings, an 8,600 square meter glass front, and facade elements in lustrous copper, create a striking feature amid the hustle and bustle of everyday business life. The stunning facade has more than just good looks, and provides excellent thermal and sound insulation.
Technical within and without
The inner Promenade Gardens also impress, with state-of-the-art energy, ventilation and water systems. Sensors measure the amount of daylight in each room, and can determine when people are present. This data exchange is sent directly to the economical LED lighting and temperature controls, and an energy-efficient variable refrigerant volume (VRV) system, allowing individual room-by-room heating, cooling and dehumidification. Three-meter high ceilings make even fully occupied offices feel spacious. Twelve liters of fresh air per person, flows into the building every hour. All five floors are connected by 18 energy-saving elevators.
Not only was sustainability the key consideration when considering building usage, but also a primary factor when selecting the location, in the planning, and during construction. LEED Gold and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) deemed the Promenade Gardens as ‘very good’ – a high rating by the group. Even during the construction phase, great care was taken to minimize the carbon footprint on the neighborhood. Dust control and noise protection measures were taken, construction vehicles were thoroughly cleaned before re-entering city traffic, and most of the materials used were sourced in Budapest or from the surrounding area, and are environmentally friendly or certified.
A little extra goes a long way
Bicycle racks and a changing room with shower are available for bike enthusiasts, as are charging stations for electric and hybrid cars. Biodiverse plant walls provide interior decoration, while regulating humidity and enhancing air quality. Special faucets and fixtures ensure economical use of water, and rainwater is collected in sufficient volume to cover usage for all toilet facilities and to water the interior garden. It’s a state-of-the-art building management system, continuously monitoring and optimizing the building’s energy and water usage.
BG-Graspointner for drainage
An array of BG-Graspointner channels are installed in the garden area, next to the water surfaces, on the terraces and around the perimeter of the building. This includes 81 meters of galvanized, closed BG-FA facade channels with grate, 315 meters of galvanized, perforated BG-FA slot channels and 151 meters of perforated BG-TE terrace slot channels of stainless steel. The latter have slot inserts to prevent solid matter from entering the channel. The design of the facade channels adds to the building's contemporary look.
The complex drainage system for the Promenade Gardens, was thought out by Sándor Liziczai, an architect with Park Stúdió Kft.. Liziczai was looking for a complete system that blended seamlessly into the underground garage, and was attracted to the wide range of solutions offered by BG-Graspointner, as well as the company’s expertise:
We assisted Liziczai in selecting the systems, and provided hydraulic calculations for our slot channels. This ensured their capacity to perform at optimal levels. Technical drawings demonstrated how the lower design height of our products served the design perfectly, while still providing excellent drainage. Environmental compatibility is a key issue for Liziczai in his projects:
Currently Liziczai is planning a project in which accumulating water seeps away directly on site. We are proud to have been part of the Promenade Gardens project.
